The International Organization for Biological Crystallization (IOBCr) is a non-profit, scientific organization for scientists who study the crystallization of biological macromolecules and develop crystallographic methodologies for their study. It was founded in 2002 to create a permanent organ for the organization of the International Conferences for the Crystallization of Biological Macromolecules (ICCBM). The goal is to facilitate the preparation of biological crystals necessary for the determination of the 3D architecture of biomolecules by crystallography. These 3D pictures provide a wealth of information that help understand how biomolecules act and interact in living organisms.
The IOBCr community is interested in growing crystals with biomolecules because they provide a means to study the architecture of the molecules making up the crystals. A crystal is composed of (bio)molecules assembled in a regular, 'periodic' way in the three dimensions.
This regularity or periodicity is at the origine of the diffraction phenomenon when a crystal interacts with X-rays. The resulting signal is used by crystallographers to determine 3D pictures of the molecules that constitute the crystal.
